Philadelphia

Vitraz is a window and door fabricator serving Philadelphia from its Brooklyn shop, building custom aluminum windows, curtain wall and entrance systems for rowhouse conversions, mill and warehouse lofts, and new mixed-use buildings. Every unit is made to the measured opening and delivered labelled, ready for your installer.

Philadelphia asks a lot of a window. Brick rowhouses share party walls and have openings that have settled out of square over a century or more. Former mills and warehouses in Kensington, Callowhill and Old City have tall masonry openings that once held steel sash. New mixed-use and multifamily buildings along the river wards and around Center City need glazing packages that pass energy review and arrive in the right order. Summers are hot and humid, winters bring freeze and thaw, and street-facing units on busy corridors need real acoustic performance.

Vitraz fabricates European aluminum systems on Aluprof profiles in Brooklyn and delivers to Philadelphia projects. We have no local office or crew there. Your contractor or glazier installs, and we build and supply. Philadelphia sits within our Pennsylvania service area, and we accept projects there now.

Philadelphia

Commercial window manufacturer for Philadelphia PA projects

Most of our work is for developers, architects and general contractors. In Philadelphia that usually means one of three things: a multifamily window package for a new build or conversion, a storefront and entrance system at street level, or a stick-built curtain wall on a mixed-use or office elevation.

We work as a fabricator, not a contractor. There is no installation bid and no glazing crew competing with your sub. Send plans, elevations and a window schedule, and we return a line-by-line quote with recommendations, glazing build-ups and thermal performance stated up front, not later during submittals. Before anything is cut, shop drawings go to the architect for approval. Every quoted system comes with the documentation needed for submittal.

On larger jobs we deliver in phases, by floor, elevation or release, so units arrive when the building is ready for them. Our commercial window systems page explains the process in more detail. For ground-floor retail, lobbies and restaurants, entrance doors come with hardware prepped in the shop to your hardware schedule: closers, exit devices, electric strikes and access-control prep, with no field rework.

Philadelphia

Rowhouses, lofts and historic fabric

Philadelphia's building stock is unusually old and unusually consistent. Trinity houses and larger brick rowhouses run through Society Hill, Queen Village, Fitler Square and Graduate Hospital. Victorian twins and stone houses fill Germantown and Chestnut Hill. Industrial buildings across Kensington, Fishtown, Northern Liberties and the Callowhill loft district have been converted to apartments and offices.

Each type has its own window problem:

Rowhouse openings are rarely square. We build every frame to the measured opening, so reveals stay even and sightlines line up across the facade. Out-of-square work is standard, not an upcharge.

Mill and warehouse conversions often had steel windows that conduct cold, rust from the inside out and rattle. Our steel-look windows keep the narrow black grid in thermally broken aluminum, with bar patterns matched to the original from a survey or a straight-on photo.

Properties under the Philadelphia Historical Commission need replacement details that satisfy review. For landmark and district work we provide details for both the installer and the reviewer. Our landmark experience includes engineering and fabricating the window systems for the Flatiron Building in New York.

Philadelphia

Climate and performance in the Delaware Valley

Philadelphia gets both extremes. Humid summers drive cooling loads and condensation risk, and cold winters with repeated freeze and thaw punish poor seals and conductive frames. Brick walls also make the frame-to-wall junction important, because that joint is where air and water usually get in.

Every Vitraz system is thermally broken, with insulated glazing standard and multi-point locking on every exterior unit. Tilt-and-turn sashes compress gaskets on all four sides, which is the difference most people notice first on a cold, windy day or a loud street. Options include triple glazing, Low-E coatings, argon fill, warm-edge spacers, solar control glass and acoustic laminates, specified per opening rather than across the whole building.

For projects chasing an energy target, all-electric design or a deep-energy retrofit, our Passive House windows start at triple glazing on the MB-104 Passive system, which carries Passive House Institute certificates for applicable configurations. Formal certification is not required to use it. Many projects simply want the best envelope performance they can get.

Systems that suit Philadelphia buildings

We fabricate nine Aluprof system families. These are the ones that come up most for Philadelphia work:

Windows, doors, curtain wall and pergolas come off the same floor on the same profiles and finishes, so a full package matches. Finishes run across a large RAL range, anodised and dual color, for example black outside and warm grey inside.

Curtain wall and storefront

MB-SR50N stick-built curtain wall for mixed-use, office and multifamily elevations, and MB-SR50N IW where the facade should read as one flat plane with hidden vents.

Multifamily and commercial windows

MB-79N is the workhorse for most residential and multifamily packages. MB-86N handles larger openings, heavier glass and higher wind and weather demands.

Steel-look replacements

MB Slimline gives the narrowest sightline for loft conversions, historic rowhouses and interior glazed partitions.

Entry and pivot doors

Thermally broken entry doors with sidelights and transoms for rowhouse and lobby entrances, and MB-86N Pivot for oversized entrances that are too heavy for hinges.

Roof decks and rear elevations

MB-59HS lift-and-slide doors open a pilothouse or rear extension to the deck, and MB-OpenSky 140 louvered pergolas give shade and rain cover above it in a matching finish.

Interior glass doors

Slim aluminum doors and full-height partitions that pass daylight into deep rowhouse floor plans and loft offices.

Philadelphia

How a Philadelphia project runs from Brooklyn

The process is the same for a single rowhouse or a full new-build elevation.

  1. Survey and specification. Send drawings or a window schedule. If you do not have drawings yet, photos and rough sizes start the conversation, and we travel for the right project.
  2. Quote. A line-by-line quote against a unit schedule, with glazing build-up and thermal performance for each opening.
  3. Shop drawings. Issued for architect approval on commercial work before any profile is cut.
  4. Fabrication. Cut, machined, assembled and glazed in our Brooklyn shop. Lead times are typically 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes as fast as 2 to 3 weeks, versus 10 to 12+ weeks for imported units.
  5. Delivery. Units arrive glazed, finished and labelled by opening, with the technical detail your installer needs. Commercial jobs can be phased by floor or elevation.

You talk directly with the people building your windows. Changes are handled in days, not months. If you need an installer who knows these systems, we can refer one.
