Interior doors

Interior doors that separate rooms without darkening them.

A solid door closes a room off completely, including from the light. Slim aluminum frames and glazed panels give you the separation without the gloom, which is why they've become the default in apartment and loft renovations where daylight only comes from one side.

Why glazed

The daylight problem in a city apartment.

Most New York apartments get daylight from one or two elevations, and every solid internal wall between the window and the back of the apartment takes some of it away. A room at the rear ends up needing a light on at midday.

A glazed interior door does the same job as a solid one, closes the room, cuts the noise, gives you privacy where the glass is obscured, while letting the light keep travelling. In a renovation it's often the cheapest thing you can do to make an apartment feel bigger.

Types

Three ways to divide a room.

Single glazed hinged interior door

Hinged

The straightforward replacement for a solid internal door, in a slim aluminum frame.

Sliding glazed door on exposed track

Sliding & pocket

Where there isn’t room for a door to swing, surface-mounted on a track, or sliding into a wall pocket.

Full-height glazed partition with door

Glazed partitions

Full-height screens with a door in them, for dividing a loft or creating a home office without building a wall.

Options

Clear, obscured, or somewhere between.

Clear glass
Obscure and reeded
Sandblasted
Acoustic laminate
Steel-look glazing bars
Matte black
Any RAL colour
Concealed hinges
Floor-to-ceiling

Reeded and sandblasted glass are the usual answer where a room needs privacy but not darkness, a bathroom or a bedroom off an open-plan space. Steel-look glazing bars are increasingly specified on interior doors even in buildings that never had steel windows.

An interior door is the one element of a renovation people operate a dozen times a day. It's worth more attention than it usually gets.

Who installs them?

Your contractor. Interior door packages are usually part of a wider renovation, so they're delivered to fit the programme, labelled by opening, ready to hang.

FAQ

Interior door questions.

Yes. Interior door packages are a common standalone project, particularly in apartment and condo renovations where the windows belong to the building.
